Black fly season

May is black fly season. The first two weeks of May only the male flies are out, and they are annoying enough but they don’t bite. The last half of the month, though, watch out! That is a dangerous time to be driving on the rural roads, as the black flies drive the moose absolutely crazy and they come running out of the deep woods into the highway in a vain attempt to escape the biting flies. As one drives through the countryside one can see the lucky horses that have owners that care enough about them to put fly sheets on their backs and over their faces. It may look odd to the casual tourist that doesn’t know much about horses, but I’m sure that the horses are grateful to have them!

Swimmers itch

When my wife read that swimmer’s itch has been reported in the pond that we live beside, she was very upset. From what we understand, swimmer’s itch is a small parasite that burrows under your skin. And the thought of a parasite burrowing into her body just totally freaks her out. She gets extremely upset if and when she ever finds a tick on her body, and she totally freaked out when she went swimming at the town’s public beach when she saw leeches in the water. She told me that she will probably never swim in a New England pond ever again. I guess that really doesn’t bother me much at all – I’m more of a boater than a swimmer.

Carpet Cleaning in Round Rock

I’m glad that my daughter finally listened to my voice of reason and contacted the round rock carpet cleaning service that I found for her online. She still doesn’t have Internet access and being new in that area she doesn’t know many people yet to turn to for recommendations for things such as this and is too busy working and being a new mommy to go to the library to use their computers.

Their new puppy has made a real mess of their carpets and I am concerned for the health of my granddaughter because she is just starting to be able to crawl around and I really hate the thought of her crawling and rolling around on such a badly soiled carpet. There is a good chance that that carpet wasn’t even cleaned from the previous tenant when she moved in just a few months ago, so I’ll feel much better when I know that she has called and had this taken care of.

Tick Season

Just found two more ticks on my legs today, which is the fourth tick that I have had to pull off of my body in just the last week. I’m glad that I have been able to locate them quickly and have been able to get them all off with no problems. The last thing I need is to come down with Lymes disease, it’s some nasty stuff.

Donuts?

From what I have learned, the worst thing you can eat for breakfast is a food that is mostly white flour, fat, and sugar. But one of the most popular breakfast foods is a donut. So what caused this contradiction? Why did people start thinking that eating donuts was a good way to start the day? And don’t get me started on why our law enforcement officers always seem to enjoy the donut!

Hooray for spring

As I get older I appreciate spring a lot more than when I was young. I don’t really know why I was so unobservant as a kid, but it was only recently that I noticed just how many plants are blossoming and how pretty they are. I’m very grateful that I don’t have spring allergies; most of my other relatives do spend several weeks during the spring suffering with allergies, sneezing and blowing their noses. I don’t know why they won’t just go to the doctor and get allergy shots! Spring is too pretty to spend indoors hiding, don’t you agree?

Beauty products from the sea

One of the things that always amazes me is when I read an article about how there are dangerous chemicals in a lot of the make-up products that people use. For example I read that a lot of brands of lipstick have dangerous levels of lead in them. And yet women still wear their lipstick! My sister was telling me that she has found a bath body website that sells beauty products that are made from natural ingredients and that some of the ingredients come from the sea. Ingredients like seaweed. What will they think of next?

Dry eyes

Here it is, almost spring, and I have not run the humidifiers all winter long, with minor dry skin as a result. Well all of a sudden today WHAM my eyes started to itch. It was really sudden, and at first I thought something had gotten into them, like a chemical, but when I think about it, I’ve just been sitting here in front of the computer; don’t have a clue how that could happen. So after several minutes of rubbing my eyes I realized that it probably is dry eyes. Guess I should consider myself lucky that I haven’t had a problem with them up until now – it just surprises me that it came on so suddenly!

I absolutely HATE putting eye drops in my eyes, but I think that is what I’m going to have to do until I get the humidifiers up and running. I was trying to get by without them because I’ve been trying to minimize the electricity usage in the house. Oh well…I tried.

Left Handed

My mother is left handed but it rarely comes up as anything significant in a regular day. About the only time her being left handed has caused a problem was when she needed a pair of scissors and I did not have a pair of left handed scissors. Other than that, I don’t think it matter much to her about being left handed.

Milk and cookies

Every now and then someone tells me that dairy products aren’t good for you. I don’t really understand why they think that. I drink low-fat milk, only about one glass a day with my evening meal, and a little bit in my morning coffee. Oh, and in my morning cereal. I LOVE having milk with a cookie, a piece of cake or pie, or a brownie. I keep meaning to try that milk substitute that I see advertised on television, I think it is called Almond Silk. But I keep forgetting about it when I get to the store. I’m thinking that it might taste like white chocolate, and I love white chocolate!
