My family always gets very invested in the presidential election. They watch every debate, following through all of the primaries, and we have very spirited discussions about the candidates and their views. Most of my family generally votes the opposite party that I vote, so I try to keep a low profile so as to avoid the temper tantrums that some people in the family have. Others in the family are not as mindful of keeping the peace, and often will wear their favorite political candidate’s advertising products on their body.

I can remember the last presidential election there was a big spirited discussion when my brother-in-law wore a ron paul shirt to the family Thanksgiving dinner. I’m not sure if the high emotions amuse me or scare me, but one thing is for certain, my family takes their politics very seriously and if you do not support their candidate of choice you can be deluged with muck raking information about your own candidate. I’m always glad when the elections are over!

I appreciate the guest post, Lindsay Valdez

If you go to direct tv lexington watch the news and take notice of how large our population has become. You hear all of the statistics about our country’s increasing waist size especially in relation to the rise of weight-related health issues like diabetes and heart disease. Driving down the interstate the other day, I was surprised to see billboards with young children on them advertising that words like “chubby” and “thick” aren’t cute but are dangerous. These public service announcements seem harsh, but clearly they are necessary. The number of young children who are clinically obese is nothing short of alarming. Our world today does nothing but encourage this problem either. We are a society dependent on fast meals due to our busy lifestyles. Outdoor play has been replaced with video games, computers, and televisions. When kids have to be reminded to “get out and play for an hour a day,” we are in real trouble. Kids innately should want to play. They should want to imagine and run and jump and climb. Their fresh bodies shouldn’t be dumping grounds for food that is lesser in nutrition and quality than that which we feed to our animals.

Over the past couple of months Pizza Hut has been running a special where you can get any size pizza, any type crust, any specialty, for only $10. Well, my family likes Pizza Hut Pizza a lot, and I had received a couple of Pizza Hut gift cards for Christmas, so I decided that I would go ahead and take advantage of their $10 special and order some of our favorite pizza – their large pan meat-lover’s pizza. Well, I have to admit that the last two times that we did that, the meat lovers pizza did not have much meat on it at all. In the past, there was so much meat on the pizza that you could hardly see the cheese or the sauce! Now you can hardly see the meat. Very disappointing.

The Golden Corral restaurant is one of my very favorite restaurants. It is an all you can eat buffet restaurant that actually has food you want to eat! I’ve been to restaurants that advertise that they have an all you can eat buffet but when you get up to the buffet table you find only five or six items, mostly cheap fillers like macaroni and cheese or spaghetti. The Golden Corral restaurant has no options except all you can eat, and their buffet tables include several types of chicken, several types of beef, several types of fish, a lot of different veggies and fruits, shrimp, and lots of different desserts too.

My wife really likes their yeast dinner rolls that they bring to your table. I know they keep bringing them endlessly, hoping to fill you up on them, but they really are good! We know that the rolls they bring to our table have to be thrown away if we don’t eat them, so my wife brings an extra large purse with her and a large gallon size zipper style plastic storage bag with her so when we are finished eating if there are any dinner rolls left over that we didn’t eat she can bring them home with us. We don’t think that is stealing because we didn’t ASK for the rolls, they just keep bringing them! She doesn’t keep slipping rolls in her purse continuously, she just puts the leftovers in after the meal. And we know they will just get tossed out when we leave if we don’t take them. So we take them and eat them the next day. They are almost as good reheated in the microwave the next day if you wrap them in a paper towel and nuke them for ten seconds.

We are expecting about twenty two people to come over, everyone is supposed to bring some kind of food to share with everyone else. They are supposed to start arriving around 3pm today and leave around 8pm.

So my wife is running around the house trying to get the house “company ready.” I’m going to go outside and mow the lawn and hide in the garage as much as possible so she doesn’t ask me to do anything inside the house to help.

One of my pet peeves is when you go into a fast food restaurant and place an order and pay for the order and then when you get the food it is missing part of the order. When you find out that it is missing (if you are lucky you are still there) and bring it to their attention, they reply “oh, we’re all out of that!” Well, don’t you think you should tell me that before I walk or drive away and offer me a refund or an alternative? This has happened at least once in every fast food restaurant chain I’ve visited, so I can’t point my finger and yell at one particular chain. Just plain old bad customer service. I think that the next time it happens to me I’m going to go online and complain to the company directly.

Last night we were all feeling too lazy to cook, so we decided to cook up the DiGiorno’s frozen pizza we have had in the freezer for a couple of weeks. It was the rising crust three meat pizza. I had my doubts about whether or not I would like it, but I have to tell you that it was really very good. So good in fact that I’ve put it on the shopping list to buy more. And chances are pretty good that we’ll be eating that pizza a lot more in the future instead of going to the pizza restaurant that costs double the amount that the frozen pizza cost!

I’ve tried their thin crispy crust pizza and didn’t like it at all, so I’m really glad I like their rising crust pizza! It’s nice to know I can have a few of them in the freezer for future times we don’t feel like cooking anything complicated!

A lot of people look down their noses at Applebee’s , but I really like their barbeque riblets a lot. In fact, when I go to Applebee’s, if they tell me they are sold out of their riblets, I don’t order something else, I leave the restaurant and go eat somewhere else! So, I look forward to the chance to eat there when I can! We’re going to try to get there as close to 5pm as possible, to beat the big dinner crowd.

One of my least favorite holidays is the Labor Day weekend. When I was a child I disliked it because that meant summer vacation was over and we had to go back to school. I did not like school. I did not like having to haul lots of the books from class to class and I hated having to do homework. I don’t think that I would have hated it quite so much if the teachers had let us keep a set of books home so that we would not have to lug heavy backpacks back and forth.

This Labor Day weekend, though, should be a good weekend because I have been invited to and a barbecue party at Tyler’s beach house. I understand that Tyler and Amy put on a great barbecue so I am looking forward to having a good time. Although I am saddened by the end of summer at least my days of carrying the backpacks to school are finished.
