Guest post by Becky Thurman

I could not believe it when I went to Wal-Mart to buy a few things, and when I went back to the car it would not start. I think that the gas line was frozen, so I went into Wal-Mart and bought a can of dry gas. I put the dry gas into the gas tank, and the car still didn’t start. Well, I decided it was time to buy a new battery, so I went back inside the Wal-Mart and went to the automotive department and told the employee that I needed to buy a new battery and have them put the battery into the car. I explained that the car was in the parking lot and that they needed to go out to it because the battery in the car had died. The employee told me that they would only install the battery for me if I brought the car inside their garage. Well, I had no way to move the car into the garage, so I told them that they had lost the sale, and I would just get a jump start for now and buy the new battery someplace else.

So out to the parking lot I went. I popped the hood of my car, got my jumper cables out and started to hook them up to the dead battery. There was a nice young man just getting out of his car parked right in front of my car (talk about great timing!) I asked him if he could help me out with a jump start, and he did. He hooked up the cables, and started my car no problem. I offered to pay him for his trouble and he refused. So I gave him a big ol’ hug and thanked him so much. Then I drove home and told my hubby what had happened. He used to work in that Wal-Mart in that automotive department. He told me that he was going to call the store manager and raise some cain. Come to think of it, I didn’t hear that phone call; I’ll have to ask him if he ever made it! One thing is for sure, that Wal-Mart will not be selling me a new battery – we will buy it elsewhere.

From time to time I see an article that sings the praises of telecommuting. I think that telecommuting is a great thing because it saves the employees a lot of time and money when they don’t have to drive to work. The only problem I’ve run into is that some companies only allow telecommuting to a select few management employees, and refuse to allow non-management employees that opportunity. I know quite a few people who feel that they could do their job just fine from home but their company won’t allow it. It seems that the company doesn’t trust the non-management employees to do their work if a manager isn’t standing right over their desks breathing down their necks.

One of my pet peeves is when you go into a fast food restaurant and place an order and pay for the order and then when you get the food it is missing part of the order. When you find out that it is missing (if you are lucky you are still there) and bring it to their attention, they reply “oh, we’re all out of that!” Well, don’t you think you should tell me that before I walk or drive away and offer me a refund or an alternative? This has happened at least once in every fast food restaurant chain I’ve visited, so I can’t point my finger and yell at one particular chain. Just plain old bad customer service. I think that the next time it happens to me I’m going to go online and complain to the company directly.

I’ve watched a lot of television news stories about how coal is removed from the earth, how dangerous coal mining is, and how the economies of states like West Virginia and Pennsylvania depend largely on coal, but I am not convinced that coal is the direction we should be going. I think that we still need to be looking at solar energy, wind energy, and bio-diesel fuels made from algae.

I love direct deposit paychecks! I never thought I would, but I really do! I’ve always wanted to be able to take my paycheck down to the bank and cash it, Made me feel like I really accomplished something, having that cash in my hand! But lately it has become more difficult to get in and out of the bank on payday quickly, and my company announced a few months ago that direct deposit was no longer going to be an option; it was going to be mandatory. I wasn’t happy about it then, but I have to admit that it is a real time saver – now I don’t have to go to the bank at all!

I plan on eating a dough boy and sausage sub for dinner. There is nothing quite like fresh fried dough. Proceeds always go to charities so it is a win- win situation. Perhaps I will take a ride in a balloon this evening and watch the sunset.

Some people like to debate whether or not the criminal justice system can be considered a system or a non- system? Personally, I do not see how some think that the criminal justice system is not a system. Clearly, the entire system is a process and a network.

I will start by saying that I can understand why some people believe that it is a non- system due to a loss of faith and repeated reports of injustice. The criminal justice system is not perfect. The world is not perfect. No system is perfect. There are going to be hick- ups in every operating system. What is important to remember is that the criminal justice system does operate according to the rules established by our government.

Not everyone agrees with all rules and ordinances that aid in governing our country. These rules follow a specific network of patterns and within each network division a process. The United States of America has by far one of the best criminal justice systems in the world. If anyone has any doubt, trying looking up the justice system in Afghanistan.

At last the time has come ot start planning my errands I have to attend to before I leave for vacation. I am very excited to leave town. Sometimes a person just needs a break from the mundane activities experienced in everyday life. Not only am I looking forward to escaping ‘normal’ life but also the pains I must deal with regularly.

Everyone deserves a vacation once in a while. Some people I think deserves it more than others however, that is not for me to decide. Some people just seem to work harder than others and therefore tend to be burnt out quicker from everyday life.

The biggest part of getting away on vacation is being isolated from everyone in my everyday travels. Seeing new people and experiencing new things is going to be awesome! Not having to actually go to work for a few days will also be very nice. I can do whatever I want it do, when I want to do it and I won’t have to report to anyone!

My gas grill decided to be “under the weather” and in need to be repaired. This put a large kink in my grilling plans. This time of year the weather is gaining warmth and with each passing day I want my dinner to be off of the grill.

So, I had to come up with the next best thing and that was to purchase another grill. A family member of mine had heard of my dilemma and decided as an early birthday present to give me some cash toward my new grill. I went down to the hardware “toy” store and began my search for my replacement or spare grill.

As I waswalking down the aisle the charcoal grills caught my eye. Specifically, a nice new red one caught my attention. I looked over the others surrounding it but I kept coming back to the red one I first saw. It was the perfect size, not to mention great price!

I decided to take it and loaded it up in my truck after purchasing it. On the way home I swung by the local meat market and picked up a couple of juicy steaks. The grill once I got it home worked beautifully and made the steaks extra tasty.

I received a phone call the other day from a good friend of mine who needed to vent on a close call with a parking ticket. Now, some might say a parking ticket, really? Yes, it was almost a parking ticket - but the principle behind it was the real problem.

The city it was issued in apparently is “hard- up” for money because they start their parking tickets at $30 and if they are not paid within 30 days then it rises to $60. I think that this is pretty darn steep.

The situation of the alleged violation boils down to a new city ordinance. My friend had taken five minutes to run into a store to pick up one item and came out with a yellow slip of paper on their windshield. The ticket indicated that they were not allowed to park facing the wrong direction. My friend was furious. So, what they did was to go into the police department and asked to speak with the officer who issued the ticket. Luckily, she was in and upon my friend entering the room she knew immediately what my friend was there for. She actually offered to take back the ticket since it was a new city ordinance. This was very nice of her but still does not explain why the cost of such violations is so high?

At any rate, my friend while flustered for a few minutes got out of the ticket and now they know not to park facing the wrong direction again in that city!
